Robots in DLP

I woke up early this morning, and made it to the theatre to see Blue Sky's Robots in the Loews DLP Cinema in San Francisco.

I found it an enjoyable movie. It wasn't filled with as many gags as I thought, and the children in the audience only laughed at some silly parts.

I also didn't feel as in touch with the characters on the screen as I did with Pixar's films, or even Blue Sky's last film, Ice Age. However, the imagery presented, and the technology portrayed in the movie, is nothing short of astounding. The DLP cinema truly made the characters stand out. Suffice to say, the work that Blue Sky did in creating the textures and animating of all the robots is amazing. Visually, the film stands on it's own. Story-wise, not so much.

I was dreading Robin Williams' performance throughout the film. It seemed that he was there for comic relief, but no one in the audience really laughed at any of his sight gags. Pretty much all his jokes are told in the trailers.

I think the best parts of the film are the breakdancing robots and Rodney's invention which he creates at the beginning of the film and becomes a bit player throughout it. I'm going to have to give this film a nice 8 out of 10.
