This gallery showcases some of the shots I completed on Hellboy, which premiered in theaters in April of 2004. Other gallery pages are listed above. Feel free to comment or ask questions about the shots below in the comments section below that.

A shot from the last Tippett sequence in the film. The baby behemoth is shown growing larger while the heroes run out of frame. This shot was fairly straightforward, in that it didn't involve large, complex 3D environments. The behemoth is CG, and the actors were shot on greenscreen on a different take. Most of the complexity involved getting the shadows to appropriately fall on the ground. |

A completely CG shot. Several different layers make up the final composite. This shot mated up with two live action shots of Hellboy, so great care was taken in getting the lighting to match the real actor. The environment is CG as well. The only parts of the shot which are photographic are the bits of snow falling off of Hellboy throughout the shot. |

This was a triple cut shot that involved our CG Sammael interacting with the real actor. The Hand of Doom is CG. I added the appropriate shadows and reflections on the floor and walls, and copious amounts of saliva when Hellboy catches the tongue. I also animated a floor tile which Sammael kicks as Hellboy pulls him toward himself. |
QT | Script |
Both characters in this shot are CG. I added some subtle effects, spit splashing out of Sammaels mouth and adhering onto the walls, and some slight color tweaks to set the CG characters into the scene. The background is a photographic plate element. |

An elaborate shot which took the better part of five weeks to complete. The original background plate had no interaction, with just the main protagonists hundled in the corner awaiting things to come. I added the splashing water from CG rocks, water running down the rocks on the right, wake elements from previous shots in the sequence, and water bouncing off of the CG Hellboy's coat. The largest of the water splashes is CG. |
QT | Script |
A fun shot to create, Sammael runs down a helpless BPRD agent. Sammael is CG, as is the agent. I added water splashes as Sammael runs, and the water interactions when he tackles the agent. I syncronized the flashing of the water droplets to the live action plate. Look for some special graffiti on the sewer pipe! |
